It was written by Terius "The-Dream" Nash, Knowles, Nick "Afrojack" van de Wall, Wesley "Diplo" Pentz, David "Switch" Taylor and Palmer Adidja. Development of the song was motivated by the fact that Knowles wanted something different - a mixture of different cultures and eras, a new sound and a message that would give women strength. An unreleased demo of the song, then thought to be titled "Girls (who run the world)" leaked on the Internet was the April 18, 2011. "Run the World" premiered in the U.S. radio on April 21, 2011, and released worldwide digitally WAS on the same date that the first single from the album fourth studio Knowles, 4 (2011).
